Polarization reconfigurable millimeter wave antenna with wideband and high gain performance

This paper presents a polarization reconfigurable millimeter wave antenna by using a rotatable 3D-printed cylindrical polarizer. The polarizer consists of several air and dielectric slabs, which can be used to switch the polarization of the antenna. By rotating the cylindrical polarizer, this antenna can achieve three selective operating modes including left-hand (LH) circular polarization, right-hand (RH) circular polarization, and linear polarization. For the two CP modes, the antenna achieve an axial ratio (AR) bandwidth of 30% (for AR ≤ 3dB) and a broadside antenna gain of 15 dBic; while for the LP modes, the antenna has an impedance widths of 50% and the broadside gain of 16 dBi. The antenna has several advantages such as reconfigurable polarization, wide band, high gain and low cost for the millimeter-wave frequency band, which is a good candidate for 5G communication.
