Designing interaction for deaf youths by using user-centered design approach

People with hearing loss have limitation in communication. According to this study in SLB-B Cicendo Bandung, Indonesia, most of the deaf students are enthusiastic to learn English. Meanwhile, they consider learning English is very hard because of the differences in pronunciation and spelling. In Indonesia, the education media to learn English is not developed much. The aim is to deliver proper interaction and user interface design for education media to help deaf youths learning English. This study uses user-centered design approach because deaf youths are unique. The proposed design for this study is a conceptual model using gamification, repetition, and leveling concept. This conceptual model uses picture, lip-reading video, text, and sign language to help users understand the contents. For usability testing, the design was implemented into high-fidelity prototype of hybrid mobile application. The result showed that the design of the prototype was already suited to most of the proposed usability goals and user experiences.
