On the discrete-time modeling and control of synchronous generators by means of variational integrators and sliding modes

This work deals with the discrete-time modeling and control design for synchronous generators by means of a variational integrator and sliding modes. First, a continuous non-conservative Lagrangian is formulated for the plant, then, the respective discrete Lagrangian is determined. Based on this, discrete-time rules are derived for synchronous generators. Second, a sliding-mode controller is proposed for the velocity stabilization of the system, and a nonlinear observer is designed for the non-measurable states. Simulations show the good performance of the synchronous generator when closed-loop with the novel discrete-time controller.
