Placement and operation of STATCOM-storage for voltage stability enhancement of power systems with embedded wind farms

Recent advances in energy storage systems (ESS) have initiated a global interest to harness their potential in enhancing reliability and robustness of power systems. In this paper, the advantages of combining STATCOMs with ESSs to act as dynamic compensation devices for voltage stability enhancement of power systems with embedded renewables are demonstrated. In this regard, the issues of placement and operation of these devices are addressed. It is shown that a desired level of voltage stability margin (VSM) for a power system with embedded wind farm can be attained efficiently, regardless of variations of wind power generation and loading condition. The placement of STATCOM-ESS is carried out by using a combination of modal analysis and continuation power flow, taking into account the probability density function of the wind farm output power. The approach of this paper is tested on IEEE 30-bus test system.
