PlatonTV: A Scientific High Definition Content Delivery Platform

Platon Scientific high definition (HD) interactive TV, PlatonTV in short, is an interactive Internet Protocol (IP) television service built to provide HD digital content to foster education, facilitate knowledge sharing, and popularize science. This chapter concentrates on PlatonTV content delivery and the related issues. It presents similar systems designed to support education and science popularization with the use of video streaming to provide background for PlatonTV presentation. The platform architecture is introduced with the content delivery network (CDN) relation to other components explained. Steps leading to and including content delivery, such as content ingest, content distribution, and management within the CDN, and content delivery to end‐users are also described. The chapter also discusses the platform availability and reliability issues and presents the authors approach to address these issues on multiple levels. Finally it provides a platform presentation.
