Multi-quantum well laser parameters for simulation of optical transmission systems up to 40 Gbit/s

Two sets of intrinsic laser parameters are presented for simulation of optical transmission systems. The first one has been extracted from intensity modulation (IM) measurements of a strained layer multi-quantum well (MQW) laser and is suitable for simulation at 20 Gbit/s. The second set of laser parameters has been extracted from IM response measurements of a strain-compensated MQW laser, which has a 3-dB bandwidth of about 30 GHz, allowing the simulation of optical transmission systems up to 40 Gbit/s. Using the first set of laser parameters we have simulated dispersion supported transmission systems at 20 Gbit/s. Using the second set of laser parameters we have investigated the influence of partial chirp compensation in a semiconductor optical amplifier on the performance of optical transmission systems using directly modulated lasers at 40 Gbit/s.
