Study on the acoustic scattering from layered rough seafloor

Acoustic scattering from the rough sea bottom is recognized as a main source in reverberation. Scattering properties from a layered bottom was studied based on finite element model. The scattering strength and scattering loss from an ensemble of rough interface realizations were investigated. It was found that they were dependent on the thickness of sediment and interference is significant in thin sediment case. By comparison with finite element model, the scattering loss could be evaluated with Eckart by chosen a proper sound speed in thick sediment case.
