Mitigation system for protecting buried pipeline located close to HV OHTL/power cable

Impact of Low Frequency Induction (LFI) and Earth Potential Rise (EPR) on pipelines has become relevant due to the HV OHTL/Underground power cable and pipeline co-located in parallel and close proximity due to right of way issues. In this paper, a three phase high voltage OH transmission line and high voltage underground power cable (132kV-HV OHTL/ Cable) running parallel to a pipeline located underground is studied using the Alternative Transient Program Launcher which is the modelling version of the Electromagnetic Transients Program (ATP/EMTP). Modeling, simulation and analysis of these two systems are presented to assess the impacts of AC couplings on pipeline. Further, this paper computes the induced potential on pipeline from two systems (OHTL and HV power cable) and investigates the impact of each system under two situations: Low Frequency Induction (steady state) and Earth Potential Rise (transient fault) conditions. Finally, the induced potentials on pipeline have been reduced to be within the allowable limits defined by international pipeline's protection and safety standards by proposing a mitigation technique.
