Case study of a mobile based application for kindergarten schools in Mauritius

In Mauritius, toddlers aged three to five usually go to pre-primary schools. In most preprimary schools, all children are in the same class although they do not learn the same thing. Hence, there are lots of problems that preprimary schools face in Mauritius. Most of them do not follow the same curriculum. Also, toddlers do not understand why they are doing some activities since the purpose is not well explained to them. Usually toddlers are not evaluated on their work and hence, parents do not know about their weaknesses. There is also very little interaction between teachers and parents. In this digital era, where mobile technology is developing rapidly, research recognizes that high-quality interactive media can have educational benefits for children above age two. Hence in this study, a mobile application has been developed to help toddlers learn more easily. There will be modules for drawings, painting, learning alphabets, numbers and shapes. Mobile application also caters for toddlers' evaluation and feedback. Application developed is for both visual and auditory learners. The aim is facilitate the learning process of toddlers by incorporating both parents and teachers in the process. The mobile application has been developed using Android platform which is free and accessible to every mobile users. Mobile application has been deployed in ten kindergarten schools in Mauritius and results show that both teachers and toddlers respond positively.
