Intelligent Inductive Power Transfer Systems for Electric Vehicles

This paper reviews the maximum efficiency technique of powering electric and hybrid vehicles using an intelligent Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) system. The need for compensation techniques followed by a mathematical model to determine circuit parameters for efficient power transfer is presented. This is followed by discussing the concept of an intelligent charging station using the concept of Internet of Things (IoT) to automate the charging process. A unique IPT system is proposed which utilizes IoT principles to interface the charging system with an off-the-grid solar panel to energize the transmitter's inductive couplers. A prototype rover capable of handling up to 100 W of power transfer is constructed, incorporated with existing IoT solutions that demonstrate the automated charging process and the design parameters are extrapolated and proposed for charging a Renault Twizy vehicle.
