Hybrid method for calculation of ion-flow fields of HVDC transmission lines

The ion-flow field is a coupled problem, the numerical analysis of which is achieved by iterative solution of Poisson's equation and current continuity equation. In this study, a highly stable method for solving the ion-flow field is proposed. The solution domain and the boundary are redefined by imposing the absorbing boundary conditions, which ensures the efficiency and stability of iterative method. The Poisson's equation and current continuity equation are solved simultaneously through the new second order iterative method. The Poisson's equation increases the boundary constraints for the electric field, which improves calculation accuracy. In order to prevent the oscillations in simulation of current continuity equation, an upwind discontinuous Galerkin method is used, which relaxes the continuity requirement at interelement boundaries. The present approach is verified to be suitable for the simulation of the ion-flow problem from the HVDC transmission lines by compared with experimental results and previous methods.
