Investigation of Baiktu-san (volcano) using space-borne SAR system

Volcanoes have characteristic surface signatures and they represent complex subsurface geological processes associated with the volcanism. Recently volcanoes are becoming serious threats to human well-being in many parts of the world and became a major natural hazard, which requires continuous monitoring regardless of local weather conditions. In this study, Baiktu-san and Hallan-san volcanoes are studied using JERS-1 SAR (L-band) and RADARSAT (C-band) SAR. Preliminary results indicate that, although both L-band and C-band SAR systems image surface geological features well, the longer frequency L-band SAR system images the surface details considerably better than the C-band SAR.
