Improved analytical estimation of rotor losses in high-speed PM synchronous machines

This paper presents a novel and more complete approach for studying rotor losses in PMSM (Permanent Magnet Surface Mounted) synchronous machines. The prediction of rotor losses, due to eddy currents in either magnets or other rotor conductive parts is of great concern for the machines design. Particularly in high speed electrical machines the eddy current losses can be severe and seriously affect the machine performance in terms of efficiency and thermal issues. Therefore, having a comprehensive tool able to predict in a fast as well as accurate way these losses can represent a useful mean for electrical machines design and analytical optimization.
