Examining a rapid calculation method of flux linkages for reluctance machines

This paper examines a rapid calculation method (RCM) to determine transient flux linkages depending on both rotor angle and coil currents. It was originally developed for small permanent magnet DC brush motors. In this paper, the RCM is applied to machines with reluctance rotors. After a short summary of the machines' characteristics, the adapted RCM is presented. Initially, the characteristic of the magnetic circuit of the machine is pre-calculated via conventional finite element analysis. Then, the RCM is used to determine the actual flux linkages of the phases at arbitrary operation points. The RCM drastically reduces the overall calculation time for a thorough analysis. Furthermore, it increases flexibility concerning variables such as different operation points, control modes and power supply. For verification, the RCM results are compared to finite element analysis data. At the end, the potential use of the method is presented based on its calculation accuracy.
