Application of Dynamic Voltage Restorer for power quality improvement in induction furnace

During the last few decades, Induction Furnace (IF) is widely preferred in steel industries for melting different types of metal scraps. During its process, it causes a huge disturbance to the nearby consumers as well as utility owing to its non-linear characteristics due to which the power quality gets deteriorated in the power system. This is because of the involvement of high power rectifiers and current source inverters involved in the IF process. There are many power electronics based custom power devices which are used to improve the power quality degradation caused by IF. In this paper, the experimental data has been taken from a steel industry employing IF using power quality analyzer. The simulations have been carried out by using this data and both the experimental and simulation results have been compared. Then, the simulation of Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) has been presented to improve the power quality in IF by harmonic reduction techniques.
