Safety aspects of the metamaterial resonator for application in magnetic resonance imaging

Metamaterials are able to control near electromagnetic fields what is highly desirable in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) applications. Here, we have used the features of the first eigenmode of a wire metamaterial in order to control safety level, in particularly to reduce the Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) in the region of a patient body during the MRI scan. We present numerically calculated electromagnetic modes of the resonator and the corresponding SAR values. Also, we discuss the possible ways to expand the safe area of wire metamaterial resonators.
