Research implications of computerized death records

Since 1978, the Office of the Medical Investigator for the State of New Mexico has recorded the contents of official death records in machine readable form. The data which are entered include demographic characteristics, circumstances, cause and manner of death and toxicology results. These data are available for research use by physicians, researchers and other state agencies. This paper will give details of the data entry procedures and examples of interesting research applications.
