Combustion properties of cable-covering materials

It is known that polyolefin compounds filled with carbon black show flame retardant properties; however, the mechanism of improvement in these proper ties has not been determined.(1)(2) We investigated the flame-retardant proper ties and thermal properties of carbon black-filled polyolefins and discovered that remarkable improvement in flame-retardant property, especially in the region where carbon black content was small, is mainly due to the pyrolysis inhibition of the polyolefin rather than the oxidation restriction in the burning process.
