New packaging technology of super smart card

It is noted that smart cards with a display and keypad, known as super smart cards, have been facing many problems in terms of the number of components and mounting technologies. To solve these problems, a super smart card that is the same size as normal credit cards and cash cards was implemented by using recently developed components and mounting technologies. The OKI super smart card, called the GPC, has the following features: (1) card size: 85.6 mm*54.0 mm*0.76 mm, conforming to the ISO standard; (2) external connection pins: 6, conforming to the ISO standard; (3) 92-pin, TAB- (tape-automated-bonding) mounted single-chip LSI; (4) liquid crystal display consisting of 12 digits, each of which is a 5*7 dot matrix; (5) keypad consisting of 24 keys, 3*8 matrix; and (6) a solar cell mounted to provide for independent operation of the card in the offline mode.
