Low-latency asynchronous networking for the IoT: Routing analog pulse delays using IR-UWB

The advances in the design of circuits and systems for low-complexity and ultra-low power IR-UWB communication has revealed the possibility of transmitting and receiving analog information, by fully exploiting the delay resolution among asynchronously transmitted pulses. This paper investigates on the feasibility of low-latency asynchronous networking through the devising of a specific system model built onto high-threshold IR-UWB transceivers using a bottom-up approach. Compared to the other wireless technologies low-latency and event-driven analog data transmission are distinctive features specifically enabled by the UWB pulses time resolution combined with asynchronous threshold detectors receivers. Revisiting networking in this cross-sectional light can possibly open the way to a significant number of solutions to critical applications and consequent research & development.
