Spatial isolation improvement between dual-polarized patches based on metamaterials

Conducted currents on metallic background, surface wave along substrate and spatial signal leakage may cause serious mutual coupling between antennas. As reported in literatures, it is of convenience to reduce the surface wave effects by changing the distribution of surface currents. But when it comes to the radiation leakage, traditional manipulations may not be efficient. In this paper, we propose a novel two-class metamaterial decoupling device composed of the interdigital structures (ISs) and the electric-field-coupled-LC (ELC) particles. A design with sub-wavelength scale of 0.6λ×0.3λ×0.053λ is demonstrated to provide 7dB isolation improvement for both co-polarization and cross-polarization when compared with traditional defeated ground structures (DGS). Such miniaturized design has good potential in modern communication systems.
