Artificial bee colony based MPPT algorithm for wind energy conversion system

The wind turbine used for power generation should be executed at the maximum power point (MPP) for maximum utilization of accessible energy in wind. Under varying wind conditions, it is required to find out the optimum rotor speed to track maximum power at any wind speed through an MPPT controller. For this purpose, a good MPPT algorithm is required to obtain maximum power from the wind. This paper demonstrates an artificial bee colony (ABC) algorithm for MPPT of a wind energy conversion system (WECS) under dynamic weather conditions. This algorithm is sensorless and does not require any previous information of the wind energy system. The problem formulation, overview and implementation of ABC algorithm to the MPPT controller for doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) based WECS are interpreted in this paper. The numerical simulations are conducted by MATLAB/Simulink. Simulation results are also demonstrated to validate the performance and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm under different wind speeds. It shows that the method considered for MPPT is simple, accurate and most effective during variable wind speed.
