Synthesis of reversible BCD-to-Excess-3 code converter using genetic algorithms

Reversible circuit is the one which prevents information loss by reversible logical operations and reduces energy consumption. For this reason, the synthesis of these circuits, particularly in nanotechnology, was addressed by researchers. Reversible circuits are created through connection of reversible gates and feedback and fan-out are not allowed in their outputs. These features led to different syntheses of these circuits in comparison with classical logical circuits. Synthesis methods of reversible circuits are fallen into analytical and automatical groups. Genetic algorithm is an automatical method which optimizes as well as synthesizes and it has been used a lot in the last few decades. Each reversible circuit is studied and compared concerning five features including quantum cost, number of gates, number of constant inputs, number of garbage output, and delay. An optimization algorithm works to improve all or some of these features in a circuit. In this paper, two various syntheses, using genetic algorithm, were introduced for reversible circuit of BCD-to-Excess-3 converter to GT library and NCT. This method improved all evaluation features in comparison with current circuits. MATLAB R2013a software package was used for simulation and genetic algorithm run.
