Variable intensity-on-off keying modulation and its application to wearable visual-MIMO

Wearable devices, such as LED clothing, have attracted significant interest recently. The attachment of LEDs to clothing increases the aesthetic effects of clothing. In this paper, we describe the convergence of communications and fashion design by applying visual-MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) to wearable devices. We propose a variable intensity-on-off keying (VI-OOK) modulation scheme for changing the color of LED clothing close to a target color while simultaneously using the LED for communication. Moreover, we propose a time synchronization method that is optimized for VI-OOK. Experimental results exemplify potential applications for Visual-MIMO communication while simultaneously increasing the aesthetics of the garment.
