Design and development of GW ultra-wideband microwave radiation source based on Marx generator

A GW ultra-wideband microwave radiation source is designed and developed. It consists of an ultra-fast 16-stage Marx generator filled with N
₂
gas at pressure up to 15atm, a 50Ω 1.6ns coaxial pulse forming line, a peaking switch and an annular converter switch. The last three units are housed in the same coaxial transmission line filled with high-pressure N
₂
gas up to 120atm. The system can operated in two models: mono-polar pulse radiation and bipolar pulse radiation. At 40kV charging voltage and 25atm switch pressure, 610kV negative mono-polar voltage pulse is generated with rise time of 600ps, pulse width of 1ns, peaking power of 7.3GW, pulse energy of 5.5J, and the main radiation energy is in the range of FFT spectrum of 100MHz-600MHz; In bipolar radiating model, another 50Ω transformer oil pulse forming line is followed by the peaking switch and RF switch, a bipolar pulse is generated successfully with -662kV (14.4J pulse energy and 8.8GW peaking power) and +410kV (5.6J pulse energy, 3GW peaking power). But the FFT spectrum move back to 50MHz-200MHz.
