Voltage regulation of a high speed BLDC generator for aircraft applications

Brushless DC (BLDC) Machines are being widely used for high speed applications in the aerospace industry. A BLDC multi-stage Generator operating in a speed envelope of (9000– 15000) rpm has been designed indigenously for the auxiliary DC power bus of aircraft. The terminal voltage of this Generator has to be regulated against speed and load variations. A PID controller is proposed to regulate the terminal voltage of the Generator. Both the Generator and controller have been modeled in the Matlab Environment using Simulink. The Voltage regulation of the Generator with Controller has been verified for various load conditions by simulation. The methodology of regulation of the high-speed BLDC Generator, selection of proper controller is presented in this paper.
