On real-time simulation for power quality assessment of a power system with multi steel plants

Among many different types of electrical loads, the operation of steel plants play as one of the most important roles in industrial systems due to the provided steel materials are considered as essential for country developments. Electric arc furnaces and multi-pulse motor drives are commonly used facilities for steel-making and rolling mill in the plants; however, the operation of these facilities presents violent and nonlinear characteristics which may cause considerable power quality impacts. In this study, the problem of power quality that occurs in a power system which feeds multi steel plants is investigated. A complete system model is thus implemented by MATLAB/Simulink for simulations; meanwhile, real-time simulation technique is introduced to increase the calculation efficiency. The issues for the harmonic analysis and improvement of voltage fluctuation are simulated and discussed as well.
