Trapping Burst Errors In Discrete-time Signals

A discrete-time signal, constrained to have one or more frequency bands with little energy, permits burst errors, i.e., clusters of impulses, to be corrected. A sliding- block algorithm, which generalizes the error-trapping algorithm used in finite-field cyclic codes to real and complex number convolutional codes for discrete-time signals, is presented and evaluated for this purpose. The algorithm is a nonrecursive algorithm related to the recursive division algorithm. A projection operator is identified as the fundamental operation of error-trapping. An implementation and evaluation of the error-trapping algorithm is presented.
