Crossed metallic gratings as metasurface with tuned crossing angle

The paper is devoted to both theoretical and experimental study of the spectral characteristics of planar metamaterials formed by crossed metallic gratings with mechanically tunable crossing angle at the microwave band. We experimentally confirm the predicted presence of transmission resonance in the spectrum of this planar metamaterial, that is dependent on the metallic strip width, strip's period and permittivity of dielectric slab. In addition, we show the strong dependence of resonance magnitude from inclination angle of the investigated structure with respect to the wavevector. Decreasing of the transmission resonance peak with the increasing the thickness of dielectric separation film, located between slabs of investigated structure, is demonstrated. Our results may open up possibilities for the design of spatial electromagnetic filters.
