Impact of mode-dependent loss on long-haul transmission systems using few-mode fibers

We investigate the impact on system reach in FMF transmission due to MDL from FM-EDFAs. While mode-scrambling can reduce the growth rate of MDL with distance, there may be stringent MDL requirements for the mode-scramblers.
