Cyber physical system application in transportation: Analysis and multiplatform implementation of a highway tollbooth case study

The transportation systems sector is a vast, open, interdependent network moving millions of tons of freight and millions of passengers. Every day, the transportation systems network connects cities, manufacturers, retailers, and offices by moving large volumes of freight and passengers through a complex network of roads and highways, railways and train stations, ferries, and airports. As a result of this type of mass transportation, bottlenecks show up which cause huge areas of congestion, especially at entrances to highway tollbooths. Therefore, this paper initiates the idea of applying cyber-physical systems in the transportation system sector. This requires a bottleneck analysis and a multiplatform implementation study into the operation of real-world transportation scenarios to identify and select the best platform. The solution presented is based on an onboard unit using wireless communication with a highway tollbooth to pass the tollbooth and avoid unacceptable delays.
