Capability analysis and design considerations of Electric Springs

The recently proposed smart load concept using Electric Spring (ES) technology is an effective solution to improve the stability and power quality of future renewable grid. ES provides rapid active and reactive power compensation in response to the voltage and frequency fluctuations in the power system. This paper presents a study of operational capability of smart load using ES technology with the consideration of ES topologies, voltage, current and power limitations of the inverter and type of the non-critical loads. Simple equations expressing the relationship between the change of active and reactive power consumption of the smart load and compensation of ES are derived for the first time.
