Abstract:

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) can no longer be ignored to ensure the reliability of continuous real time operation of renewable energy microgrid power system. Wide range of conducted and radiated noises are disruptive to all electronic systems and relevant components. In this paper, EMC considerations of those noises are discussed. A case study of radiated noise injection from solar modules has been conducted which found that solar modules can behave as good antennas when close to an electromagnetic source; receiving multiple frequencies over a broad spectrum. Also, another baseline conducted emission testing is performed for a 10 KVA single phase static synchronous compensator (STATCOM). Results show considerable noise above the standard limit where no electromagnetic interference (EMI) filter is installed in prototype.
