Efficient EMC modeling tool for complex onboard antenna problems with a flexible fast MoM-PO hybrid framework (invited paper)

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) modeling of complex onboard antennas is really a challenge in computational electromagnetics (CEM), especially in the presence of electrically large platforms. We usually face an electromagnetic system consisting of multi-scale structures, and it is almost impossible to handle the whole system with just one CEM method. Even though we turn to hybrid methods, such as the method of moments - physical optics (MoM-PO), we find that the conventional MoM-PO method has serious bottlenecks not only in the MoM part, the PO part, and ray tracing, but also in the hybridizing scheme. To efficiently handle EMC problems of complex antennas onboard large-scale platforms, a new fast MoM-PO hybrid framework is proposed, based on which an efficient EMC modeling tool is developed. This new hybrid framework introduces a creative scheme for PO current calculation to reduce the computational time from O(N2) to O(N). Therefore, it is much faster than the conventional MoM-PO method and maintains the same accuracy. Moreover, the fast MoM-PO hybrid framework provides excellent flexibility that each part of the hybrid method can be improved independently. With this flexible framework, more functions can also be conveniently added, such as half-space solution and equivalent source modeling for complex antennas. In our new version code, graphic process unit (GPU) parallel computing is fully utilized to achieve efficiency improvement further.
