HBBO optimization for optimal reactive power dispatch incorporating TCSC and TCPS devices

This paper proposes a new hybrid biogeography based optimization (HBBO) approach for solving complex optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem in order to improve voltage profile and network losses. Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) has become commonly used device to improve the laudability and overall performance of power system and can also maintain the power system to run under normal conditions. Here, two types of FACTS devices namely, thyristor-controlled series capacitor (TCSC) and thyristor-controlled phase shifter (TCPS) are considered for minimizing voltage deviation and transmission loss. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed approach is demonstrated on a standard IEEE 30-bus test system. In this study, the optimization results obtained from HBBO are analyzed and compared with the same obtained by artificial bee colony (ABC), particle swarm optimization with inertia weight approach (PSOIWA) and real-coded genetic algorithm (RGA). A comparison of simulation results reveals optimization efficacy of the proposed scheme over other approaches.
