Performance enhancement of microstrip patch antenna array with incorporation of metamaterial lens

The MetaMaterial (MM) encompasses various unique properties viz. negative index of refraction, - ε & -μ, backward wave propagation which embellish the performance of antenna. The paper describes the properties of MM and designing of the MM lens. It emphasizes on the incorporating MM lens with antenna for enhancing its performance parameters viz. gain, directivity, main lobe level, bandwidth, radiating power and maximum power per unit area. In paper the various patch antennas are designed at different resonant frequencies viz. 1.9 GHz, 2.4 GHz, 3.5 GHz & 5.8 GHz which serves as crucial bands in wireless communication. Moreover, the MM lens is dedicatedly designed for each patch antenna and its array using combination of wire and Split Ring Resonator (SRR) structure as an unit cell. The performance analysis is carried out wherein all the governing performance metrics are observed in both cases viz. performance without MM & performance with MM. The simulation results are illustrated with polar plot, 3D radiation plot, S parameter plot, power radiation & power pattern plots. Further more, the exhaustive comparative analysis is carried out and improvement in every metrics is depicted graphically.
