Modeling And Identification Of Fluid Dynamic Phenomena For Slender Bodies

This paper surveys the fluid dynamic effects which significantly affect the forces and moments acting on an appended slender body of revolution. The goal is to determine a model structure suitable for use in a maximum likelihood system identification algorithm. Fluid phenomena considered are linear effects modeled by potential flow theory and the nonlinear effects of leeside vortices, free vortices, and the Magnus effect. Particular emphasis is placed on the determin- ation of which effects involve memory (thus increasing the order of the system) and the isolation of those dimensionless parameters which cannot be determined with consistency from current fluid mechanics theory. Applications are to submersible ocean-going vehicles and to missiles.
