SAR studies for UWB implanted antenna for Brain-Machine-Interface application

The recent advancement in science and technology gives possibility to collect the neural activities of brain and control or operate an external device or machine, which could be a great help for the patients with neural injuries. One of the possible way is to use of an implanted wireless device for Brain-Machine-Interface (BMI). A central component for wireless BMI is an antenna, to provide a communication link with out-body machines. The radiation characteristics of BMI devices are important in term of both safety and performance. The implanted device will be placed in the human head for a long period of time, hence radio frequency energy absorption or Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) will come to the particular interest. An Ultra Wideband (UWB) antenna and human head as a medium for wireless BMI with placement between the skull bone and under fat and skin layers for SAR studies are discussed over UWB frequency band. Simulation results are confirming that, the SAR level is much below the safety limit recommendations from available standards.
