Parametrization of automotive lithium-ion batteries and its influence on the wireless in-battery channel

The employment of wireless communication within the battery management system of electric and hybrid vehicles requires a deep understanding of the communication channel. We have already developed a set-up to emulate this channel in previous work. This allowed us to measure and also to simulate the channel transfer function. In this new contribution, we continue analyzing the communication channel by parameterizing the battery and the antenna system. We investigated the influence of the battery dimensions, the antenna positions and the number of the antennas. As previously, we studied two different frequency ranges: below 600 MHz with helix antennas and between 2.2 GHz and 2.6 GHz with PIFAs. The results revealed that most channel characteristics are hardly dependent on the investigated parameters at lower frequency. However, the attenuation increases significantly with the distance between antennas and with the number of slaves at this frequency interval. Hence, working at high frequencies might be a better alternative for large amounts of antennas, e.g. with cell-wise monitoring.
