A Mathematical Model for Total Power Control Loop of Large PHWRs

A simple low dimensional nonlinear dynamic model for total power control loop of a large Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) is presented in the paper. The model is derived from first principles and it can be utilized for control system studies. The dynamics of reactor and various components and subsystems of the total power control loop are described by ordinary differential equations and difference equations. The developed model is validated using transient datasets obtained from operational 540 MWe Indian PHWR, Unit 4 of Tarapur Atomic Power Station, India. The work reported in this paper will be very useful to control system engineers in the controller design and simulation of total power control loop of PHWRs.
