Engineering in a sacred river [Back Story]

In Hindu legend, the god Vishnu created the river Ganges while stepping across the universe: On his second step his big toe caught in the fabric of the cosmos, letting water pour in from the divine ocean beyond. The resulting flow that courses through heaven and drops down to Earth is what Indians call the Ganga.
