Exploring vs. Enjoying: The Choice between Hedonic IS in Post-Adoption Scenarios

The increasing spread of electronic entertainment systems and content delivery networks have changed how individuals make choices for their leisure time. Users can choose not only between different activities, e.g. sports, movies, but also between different technologies for the same activities. While the initial adoption of technologies received a lot of attention, there is hardly any research concerned with how individuals decide between adopted technologies. This study analyzes the choices among different technologies in a post-adoption scenario. Our approach applies the assessment of two technologies in the same dimensions. The study presents multiple findings for IS research. First, the antecedents of continuous use intentions differ from the antecedents of usage intention in a post-adoption scenario and can shed light on the choice between technologies for the same purpose. Second, we propose a way to analyze choice scenarios. Finally, we provide the first study of a choice scenario between hedonic IS.
