Where is the smart transport going?

The purpose of this invited plenary paper is to present authors' ideas of the actual state of the smart transport and trends of its potential further development, including a brief outline of visions going up to both short-time and long-time horizons. The aim is to create a framework for another wide domain where machine intelligence and informatics (the main topics of the SAMI 2016 conference) could be applied. The authors try to emphasize challenges and problems lying ahead and seen in the light of currently known control, information and communication technologies. A part of the paper deals with short description of research activities of the authors' university just in the field in question.
