A learning module on sound analysis using LabVIEW

In this study, a learning module on sound analysis consisting of eight laboratory exercises were introduced. It discusses the concept of Fourier techniques to analyze signals in the frequency domain using LabVIEW's graphical programming language. The learning module also presents the process of acquisition and generation of an acoustic signal. As an application to the learnings from the previous exercises, the frequency response of a cellphone loudspeaker was obtained which serves as a culminating activity for the learning module. To provide the controlled environment necessary for conducting acoustic measurements, an acoustic chamber was constructed. As a way to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning module, select forty 5th year BS Electronics Engineering students were selected to participate in the evaluation process. Pre- and Post-test surveys were given to them to assess their performance before and after answering the learning module. The obtained frequency response measurements of the loudspeaker were verified by looking into the specification provided by the manufacturer. From the results of the evaluation, students were able to familiarize the concepts of digital signal processing as applied in the field of acoustics.
