Increasing Limits of Grid Extension for Renewable Integration through Decentralized Compensation

The increasing penetration of HV- and MV-networks with distributed generation (DG) is changing the network topology and operation requirements. The interconnection of DG is often done by cable lines leading to a huge up-rating of the capacitive earth fault current. This can be a challenge for the operation of compensated grids. The series impedance of the cable can also have significant impact. A medium voltage (20 kV) system was modelled and extended to a maximum expected share of DG. The influence of long cables and the difference between centralized and decentralized earth fault compensation schemes are investigated.
