Integrated optics for nano-scale energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) applications

Energy-assisted magnetic recording (EAMR) is a promising technology for ultra-high density, nanometer-scaled, magnetic recording. The EAMR technique requires using a laser beam to define magnetic features, wherein high-efficiency optical coupling and delivery of highly focused optical energy to features much smaller than the optical wavelength are key challenges. We have proposed and designed an on-wafer microfocal lens to achieve high-efficiency optical coupling. Energy delivery is further enhanced with the integrated aluminum near-field transducer based on localized surface plasmon resonance. Simulations indicate that, at 450 nm wavelength, spot sizes below 40 nm can be generated to enable recording density in excess of 1 Tb/in

. The proposed features can be implemented using standard industry top-down fabrication processes, thus facilitating integration of the optical-delivery components into conventional industrial manufacturing.
