Knowledge engineering in cardiology: the importance of the human expert

The authors present an expert system designed to help the electrophysiologist in determining the location of the accessory pathway in patients suffering from the Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. Only data obtained from the 12-lead surface electrocardiogram need be used. The construction of the knowledge base and the facilities for incorporation of heuristic knowledge are described, and 11 screens from the system are presented graphically and briefly characterized.<
