Automated leveling in a real-time sea level monitoring system

The University of Hawaii (UH) Sea Level Center maintains an array of automated in situ sea level gauges that telemeter data in real-time via geostationary satellites. The Center has developed a robust arrangement of fault-tolerant instrumentation including an automated switch that allows us to use conventional tide gauges to measure long-term sea level trends. This reference level switch also allows the Center to produce accurate in situ sea level information in real-time for use in forecast models and for satellite altimeter calibration. The UH sea level monitoring system, procedures and equipment essential to producing and distributing real-time high quality in situ sea level information are detailed with emphasis on the use of the automated reference level switch.
