Microdisk cavity-coupled MoS2 with tunable narrowband emission

Monolayer MoS
₂
has emergent photoluminescence (PL) at the monolayer limit. In this work we incorporate monolayer MoS
₂
to a fabricated silica optical resonator microdisk cavity, coupling the PL from the 2-D material to the optical cavity modes. The resultant emission is spectrally narrow, with quality-factors (Q) as high as 900. By subsequently altering the cavity thickness, we are able to tune the position of the emission peaks by more than the free spectral range (FSR) of the cavity modes. This tunability also shows the potential for this device architecture to serve as a highly-sensitive platform for bio-analyte sensing.
