Experimental Study of Borehole Logs for Oil and Gas Exploration

Oil and gas are conventional energy resources found in the earth's crust. These resources are formed by remains of sea plants and animals buried over millions of years. The plants and animals undergo a metabolic conversion, under earth's high temperature and pressure on geological time scales. Oil and gas reserves have served as workhorse for industrial revolution. Geological surveys are conducted to find out the location of these hydrocarbon reserves. Once the site is identified, the well logs are taken to get information about the formation pressure and reservoir characteristics. This information is very important for the identification of oil zone and decision for oil extraction. As oil extraction involves a lot of money, so oil extraction without well logging information can result in huge loss to the investors. There are different types of well logging techniques used, such as logging while drilling, measuring while drilling and wire line logging techniques. The well logs used in research were collected using wire line logging technique. This research used a comparative approach to identify the oil and gas zone. In order to identify the oil zone using wire line logging technique, this work compares the different log trends and their curve response values with standard experimental results. The portion of the log curves, which match the experimental results, are recognized as an oil zone. The well logs taken in this research are from the Liao he oil field in Liaoning province of China.
